If your vintage VW Beetle has a burned out rear signal light, you must replace the bulb immediately. Driving without a signal light is not only unsafe, but illegal. Fortunately, replacing the bulb is an easy fix that you can do yourself. Here's how to replace the bulb in a 1970's model VW Beetle.
Instructions
- 1
Visit your local auto parts store and purchase a replacement bulb. You'll need to know the year and model of your VW Beetle in order to get the correct replacement bulb.
2Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin.
3Remove the screw holding the turn signal light lens on the rear fender with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the lens off of the signal light assembly. Inspect the gasket for dryness, cracking or dry rot and replace it, if necessary.
4Push the burned out bulb in slightly, turn it counterclockwise and pull it out of the socket. Wipe out the socket with a clean cloth to be sure it's free of corrosion and install the replacement bulb.
5Put the lens assembly back into place and replace the screws holding the lens.
6Reconnect the negative battery cable.
7Turn on the ignition and make sure the rear signal light works.
