How to Spray Bulldog Adhesion Promoter

Bulldog Adhesion Promoter is a solvent manufactured by Klean-Strip that prepares plastic surfaces for the base coat of paint. The adhesion promoter is ideal for use on plastics, such as bumper covers, that are flexible and have poor adhesion properties for automotive paint. The adhesion promoter effectively replaces paint primer, so any surface imperfections should be corrected before application. The adhesion promoter is available as a solution to be use in air-powered paint guns as well as an aerosol spray.

Clean the part to be painted with a wax and grease remover. Scour the surface with an abrasive cleaner or compound, then thoroughly rinse off the residue with a steady stream of water. If water beads on the surface, it should be scoured more until the water comes off the part in sheets.

Dry the area to be painted. Move the part to a painting booth and remove all dust with an air blower and a tack cloth.

Spray on the adhesion promoter in even passes until the entire part has been covered. Allow the adhesion promoter to flash dry for three to five minutes, then apply a second coat. If enough adhesion promoter remains in the can, add a third coat after the second coat has flash-dried for three to five minutes.

Continue to paint the part by applying the base coat according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. It is best to apply the base coat before the adhesion promoter has dried.

Prepare the part to be painted as with the aerosol solution in steps 1 and 2 above. If the part is not immediately going to receive a base coat, mix one part adhesion promoter with two parts primer. Load the adhesion promoter into an air-powered paint gun and set the pressure to 30 to 40 PSI, or according to the manufacturer's instructions for an HVLP gun.

Spray on two or three coats of the adhesion promoter, allowing it to flash dry three to five minutes between coats. If the adhesion promoter has been mixed with primer, more time may be necessary to allow it to set.

Load the paint gun with four parts base coat mixed with one part adhesion promoter. Mixing the two allows the adhesion promoter to act as a flex agent on plastic parts. Apply the base coat according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.

Apply the clear coat mixed with adhesion promoter in a 4:1 ratio once the base coat is as dry as recommended by the clear-coat manufacturer. Apply as many clear coats as necessary and allow the part to completely dry.
