The Volkswagen Passat has three generations-one from 1990 until 1997, the next ran until 2005 and the current body style was introduced in 2006. No matter the year and style or type, such as VR6, Turbo or Lux, you can change a blown electrical fuse yourself. The process is the same, although the specific fuse locations may differ, so check your owner's manual for detailed information.

Instructions

    1

Shut off your Volkswagen Passat before replacing a fuse. Find the fuse box on the driver's side of the car under the dashboard and to the left side.

    2

Pry the cover off of the fuse box to reveal the fuses. Check the inside of the cover for a list of fuses and their specific locations. As an example, in a 1995 Volkswagen Passat VR6, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) fuse is in slot 4.

    3

Remove the fuse by pulling it straight out. Inspect the inner bulb to verify it's blown, represented by a melted or broken wire.

    4

Find a new fuse of the same rating to replace the blown fuse. In the example in Step 2, the ABS uses a 15 amp fuse.

    5

Push the new fuse firmly into place and replace the fuse box cover. Try out the new fuse once you restart your car.
