So you have a nice Camaro or Chevelle, and you want to remove the engine from your classic Chevy so you can have more horsepower. The older cars are relatively easy to work on if you have some mechanical ability.

Instructions

How to Remove the Engine from Your Classic Chevy

    1

Drain the antifreeze and the oil from the car into acceptable discard buckets. You will need to discard both at an appropriate discard facility.Remove the power steering pump, the air compressor, the alternator, the air pump, the radiator hoses and any other external accessories.Remove the carburetor. Put a rag in the intake, so dirt and dropped bolts and tools cannot fall into the engine. Remove the distributor.

    2

If you are not using a lift, you will need to block the wheels so the car cannot roll. Unbolt the headers from the engine. Go underneath the car and unbolt the transmission from the engine block. Some of the transmission bolts are difficult to reach. You may need to create an extra long extension by hooking two of them together to reach the bolts. Unbolt the motor mounts.

    3

Once the engine is loose from everything holding it in the car and all accessories are removed from the engine, you are now ready to take the engine out of the car. Hook up the engine hoist and begin to jack the engine up out of the car. You should have two people helping you - one on each side of the car to help guide the engine out and to move wiring and hoses out of the way, should they get hung up on anything.

    4

Remove the torque converter from the transmission and stuff a rag in the hole in the torque converter so dirt cannot get in there. You should also put a jack stand under the bellhousing of the transmission, so that the weight is not pulling down on the tailshaft.

    5

Once your engine is out, put it on the engine stand. Do not leave it on the hoist. You can now either call someone to take it away, sell it, or start taking it apart if you are going to do a rebuild.
