Automotive paint is commonly made up of layers to get a good stable paint result. Organic solvents are usually present along with pigment to color the paint. Some cars may also have paint that contains metallic pigments to add shine to the top paint layers. Each paint layer has different ingredients.
Primer Components
Primers are applied first to give a car a smooth, even base for paint. Resins and fillers are used to fill in small imperfections and primers may also contain barium sulfate, toluene or xylene and isocycanates.
Basecoat Ingredients
The basecoat is a colored layer with pigment. It can contain methyl ethyl ketone and xylene (organic solvents), titanium dioxide and metallic pigments for color.
Thinner Components
Thinners are used to extend (thin) paint. They contain the organic solvents butyl acetate, ethylbenzene, toluene or xylene and the organic compound methyl ethyl ketone.
Clearcoat Ingredients
The clearcoat protects from scratches and is made up of the organic solvents toluene, petroleum naptha, mixed dibasic esters and the organic compound methyl ethyl ketone.
Hardener Components
Hardeners are used to prolong the life of the automobile paint. They can contain the organic solvents ethyl acetate and toluene. Aliphatic polyisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanates can also be used.
