Understanding how to properly jack up your truck when performing do-it-yourself auto repair is incredibly important for your safety and to prevent damage to the vehicle you are repairing. With a few simple steps, you can jack up your truck properly.

Instructions

    1

Gather the tools you will need to properly jack up and secure your truck off the ground. This should include a hydraulic jack, jack stands and a clear area to work. Make sure there are no tools, children or pets around during this process. They could lead to an accident or injury.

    2

Tighten the release screw on the jack. Slip the jack underneath the vehicle's control arm which is located behind the tire. Use the lever on the jack to raise the head of the jack and thus raise the vehicle. Using the control arm takes all the travel out of the suspension, making it easier and quicker to jack the truck up.

    3

Stop pumping the jack lever when the wheel spins freely. This is high enough to perform any service you need to do. Look under the vehicle and notice the control arm assembly where the jack is located. Underneath the shock absorber is a good place to locate one of your jack stands.

    4

Place a second jack stand under the frame of the vehicle if need be. Turn the release screw on the jack to allow the jack to lower the vehicle onto the jack stand's receiving cups. Give the vehicle a slight shake to make sure it is secure. It's better to have the vehicle fall before you are underneath it.
