The Chevy Avalanche is a sport utility truck designed for having fun and hauling recreational toys likes campers, boats and ATV trailers. Since you'll most likely drag this vehicle through mud, muck and dirt, you need to clean and lubricate your hood and tailgate latches about every 5,000 miles, or at least as often as you change the oil in Chevy Avalanche models from 2001 forward.

Instructions

    1

Clean and lubricate the tailgate latches first. To get to the tailgate latches, raise the release handle and lower the tailgate. Then, use a soft cloth to wipe away mud, dirt and gunk from each latch mechanism.

    2

Remove any rust build up on the latch mechanism and spray it with WD-40. Then, use a good quality lithium grease spray, like Pro-Honda White Lithium Grease, to thoroughly saturate the latch mechanisms. Make sure you spray directly into the mechanism.

    3

Test the tailgate latches to make sure they don't squeak, scrape or catch. If they do, then lower the tailgate again and apply another application of the lithium grease. If you're still hearing squeaks, examine the tailgate hinges to see if they are the culprits.

    4

Reach inside your Chevy Avalanche and release the hood latch. Then, open the hood and secure it.

    5

Attack the dirt and grime that has built up inside and around your hood latch mechanism. This area can be a trap for sand and dirt, which when mixed with grease will turn into a cement mixture that can cause your latch mechanism to fail or become stubborn.

    6

Use a soft cloth to clear out any debris and to wipe away as much dirt as possible. Remove any rust oxidation from your latch mechanism. Then, apply WD-40 to the latch mechanism and activate the latch a few times to work it into the latch assembly.

    7

Lubricate your hood latch with your lithium spray grease. Spray around the edges of your latch, as well as, directly into the latch system. Wipe away any grease that falls outside the latch system. Test your latch and apply another coat, if needed.
