How to Replace Car Piston Rings

Though they are relatively small, and inexpensive, piston rings play a crucial part in your engine's performance. Rather than relegating the task to an auto repair technician, you can easily replace the piston rings yourself.

Clean and degrease as much of your engine as possible before you start removing components. This makes it easier to identify parts, and makes it easier for you to secure a grip with your tools.

Consult your auto repair manual and begin disassembling your engine. You must access the cylinders, which typically involves removing the engine head.

Scrape clean the engine surface above each cylinder. Cover the cylinder holes to prevent any debris from falling inside.

Remove each cylinder carefully, according to your auto repair manual. Clean the carbon deposits from the pistons by soaking them in kerosene.

Use a piston ring tool to remove the defective piston rings. Clean each ring groove with kerosene to remove any build-up. Check the width of each ring groove with a feeler gauge to make sure they meet the specifications in your repair manual. Excessively worn ring grooves require an entirely new piston.

Grab your piston ring tool and begin replacing the defective rings. Take your time and make sure you don't stretch the rings to the point of breaking.

Inspect the entire piston thoroughly and reassemble.
