The fuel filter in your Saturn VUE keeps the fuel in the fuel injection system clean, which prevents plugged fuel injectors or a plugged fuel pressure regulator. Some mechanics recommend changing your fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Follow the directions below to replace the fuel filter in a Saturn VUE in under 45 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Detach the negative cable on the battery. Take off the air cleaner assembly and wrap a shop towel around the fuel test port fitting. This fitting is at the lower rear of the engine. Remove the cap and connect a fuel pressure gauge.

    2

Put the bleed hose from the pressure gauge into the fuel container and open the valve to allow the pressure out. Remove the gauge from the test port and recap it. Put the air cleaner assembly back in place.

    3

Take out the fuel filter bracket screw, then remove the fuel feed and return lines from the filter. Pull the used fuel filter out of the bracket and put the new filter in its place. Connect the new fuel line retainers to the female portion of the quick connect fittings.

    4

Connect the fuel feed and return lines. Hold the fuel filter bracket in place and fasten the screw that secures it. Tighten the screw to 35 in-lbs. Reattach the negative battery cable.

    5

Turn the ignition on for 5 seconds, then turn it off for 10 seconds. Repeat this on-and-off pattern twice more to prime the fuel system.

    6

Crank the engine until it starts. If the engine doesn't start, prime the system again by repeating Step 5. Start the engine of your Saturn VUE and check for leaks. Make repairs if necessary.
