The 1998 Ford Mustang came standard with bucket seats; thus, all models have a center console and a floor-mounted gearshift handle. Although removing the center console isn't a typical maintenance procedure, it may be required if you want to make modifications to your Mustang's interior or if the console is broken and you want to replace it. The console is attached to the floorboard and the lower dash panel. Removing it takes approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Unhook the negative cable (--) from the battery with a pair of pliers. Position the cable away from the terminal to prevent accidental contact during the procedure. This prevents shock when you are handling the electrical wiring and components.

    2

Pry up the plastic panel surrounding the gearshift handle. Use a trim tool or a similar flat-bladed tool. If using a metal tool, wrap the tip in masking or duct tape to prevent scratching the plastic. Start at the bottom corner and work your way around until the panel is unhooked. Lift the front part of the panel up and over the gearshift handle. On the underside of the panel you'll find the power outlet/cigarette lighter connection. Unplug it, and move the panel to the side.

    3

Open the center console's lid. On the top edge, you'll find two black rubber covers. Pry these covers up with the trim tool. Behind the covers you'll find two Phillips-head screws. Remove these screws, and lift the plastic storage liner out of the console storage.

    4

Remove the two Phillips-head screws from beneath the console liner, and then remove the two Phillips-head screws from the front part of the center console. These last two screws are visible only with the gearshift handle panel removed. Engage the parking brake to move it to the up position; this allows you to maneuver the console around it.

    5

Push the rear part of the center console up until the console is above the parking brake lever. Then pull the console rearward at a 45-degree angle to remove it from the Mustang. It's easier to do this from the back seat.
