Flash rust is a common occurrence when working with metal, and there are several different reasons why it happens. It occurs when cutting metal with a waterjet, or when coating the surface with a waterborne material. Preventing flash rust means stopping it before it has a chance to set, and that means properly protecting the metal.

Instructions

    1

Rub down the steel panel with a red scuffing pad. This will prepare the primer for mechanical adhesion but also will clean off any surface rust on the metal.

    2

Wipe down the panel using the automotive cleaner/degreaser and the lint-free paper towels. This will remove all grease from the panel and ensure that the primer can sink into the metal.

    3

Apply the self-etch primer using the spray can. Work horizontally across the panel. For the first coat, lightly spray on the primer so that it doesn't get too wet, with a 25 percent overlap on each pass. This is the mist coat.

    4

Apply the self-etch primer using the spray can in a heavier coat, using the same techniques as in Step 3. Repeat the process for a total of four coats. The metal is now protected from flash rust.
