The Chevy Impala has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. You may need to replace the ABS controller if the ABS warning light comes on, although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Chevy Impala will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Impala. The Impala was first equipped with ABS in 2001.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. You will find the ABS controller under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column.

    3

Release the ABS controller from its bracket using the pressure tabs. Unfasten the retainer on the bracket and slide the ABS controller off the bracket. Unplug the electrical harness and remove the ABS Controller from your vehicle.

    4

Install the ABS controller by inserting it into its bracket in the instrument panel. Connect the electrical harness and ensure the electrical connections are secure. Slide the ABS controller onto the bracket and ensure the retainer locks the relay to the bracket. Fasten the retainer. Connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    5

Start the engine and ensure the ABS light is not on. Ensure the ABS light does not come on while driving, especially during braking.
