Instructions on How to Paint a Bumper Car

Bumper cars are a common attraction in amusements parks, fairs and carnivals. The mini-collisions the cars withstand make it integral for the cars to be built with durable materials. Fiberglass is used for the bumper car body because of its impact resistant qualities, light weight, anti-rusting properties and anti-denting capabilities. Bumper cars undergo constant wear and tear and a new coat of paint works wonders to restore its shine.

Sand the body of the bumper car with an orbital sander until the surface is smooth to the touch. Sanding the surface provides better adhesion for the new paint.

Wash the surface with a soap and water to remove dust and debris. Wipe down with a soft rag.

Pick an appropriate color for the surface. If painting over a light-colored surface, choose a light color; a dark surface requires a dark color for best opacity. Acrylic paints yield the best results. Use a base coat for newer fiberglass models for extra surface protection.

Cover the surrounding area with a plastic tarp to cover accidental spills.

Pour fiberglass primer into a spray gun.

Spray multiple, even coats of primer on the bumper car's fiberglass surface, allowing each layer to dry before spraying the next.

Mix fiberglass gel-coat with hardener as per the manufacturer's directions and using a small bucket. The gel-coat provides an extra level of protection for the painted fiberglass. Insert the gel-coat mixture into a gel-coat gun.

Spray the gel-coat over the fiberglass as evenly as possible in the same manner as the primer. Follow with a second layer after the first one has dried. Do not over-spray in any one area to avoid dripping. Allow the bumper car paint job to dry.
