If you notice a puddle of oil under the engine of your Ford Mustang, it's possible that a worn out oil pan gasket is to blame. Replacing the oil pan gasket in a Ford Mustang isn't an easy task, and will vary between models. However, these are the basic steps for most Ford Mustangs after 1995.
Instructions
- 1
Unhook the negative battery cable and the air inlet tube from the air cleaner housing and throttle body. Remove the plastic radiator cover, the weather seal on the hood and wiper arms.
2Remove the cowl vent screen on the left side and the windshield wiper module. Install an engine support but don't lift the engine yet.
3Set the parking brake and put a block in front of the rear wheels. Use jacks to raise the front of the vehicle and set it safely on jack stands. Take off the mount through bolts on the front engine, and slightly raise the engine.
4Take off the starter motor, and if applicable, remove the cooler lines to the automatic transmission. Drain the oil from the engine into a disposable receptacle and take off the oil filter. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts on the oil pan housing and the bolts on the crankshaft lower shield sensor. Remove the remaining bolts on the oil pan mounting.
5Divide the shaft on the steering column at the joint and put a transmission jack underneath the front subframe. Mark the position in relation to the chassis to make reinstallation easier.
6Remove the mounting bolts from the sub frame, the lower shock absorber arm bolts on both sides, and carefully lower the subframe. Take off the oil pan and pour out any remaining oil. Wipe the sealing surface on the oil pan with solvent and a clean rag, making sure it's perfectly clean. Put a few drops of silicone on the new gasket, install it, and give it a few minutes to set up.
7Reinstall the components in the reverse order as listed above and install a clean oil filter. Carefully remove the car from the jack and replace the motor oil.
