Losing lubrication in an engine will destroy it. The oil pump makes sure this doesn't happen by cycling oil through the engine and keeping it lubricated. In most cases, the oil pump lasts the lifetime of a car, but if there is an accident or if an engine needs overhauling, the oil pump in the Chevy Camaro sometimes needs to be replaced.

Instructions

Remove the Oil Pump

    1

Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels and engage the emergency brake so the car doesn't roll.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable on your Chevy Camaro and remove the engine front cover. Take out the oil filter adapter along with its pressure regulator valve and spring. Remove the oil pump cover and the oil pump gear set.

    3

Clean the surrounding cables with water and old rags to avoid corrosion from salt and other road maintenance substances as well as dirt.

Install the New Oil Pump

    4

Lubricate the gears on the oil pump with petroleum jelly, then install the gear set into the front cover. After you do this, pack the gear cavity with more petroleum jelly. This gets it set for proper priming.

    5

Install the new oil pump cover for your Chevy Camaro by torquing the screws on it to 98 in. lb. Install the oil filter adapter with a new gasket, pressure valve and spring, torquing the bolts to 11 ft. lb.

    6

Reinstall the front cover assembly, torquing those bolts the 11 ft. lb. Reconnect the negative battery cable and take away the engine support fixture.

    7

Check to make sure your engine oil level is correct then start the vehicle and check for leaks where you were working.
