If you notice that your GMC Sierra 1500 is leaking oil, it may be time to replace a worn oil pan gasket. Changing the oil pan gasket on a 1999 to 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6.5 L motor is a fairly straightforward task, so don't be afraid to try it yourself. Changing the oil pan gasket on smaller motors is much more involved.

Instructions

    1

Park the GMC Sierra on a level surface and set the parking brake. Be sure to block the rear wheels to keep them from rolling.

    2

Disconnect the battery cables and remove the oil dipstick, flywheel cover, oil cooler guides, front driveshaft. Unhook the exhaust pipes and remove the front engine mount bolts.

    3

Put a bucket under the oil pan and remove the drain plug with a socket wrench. Let the oil drain into the bucket, and when it's finished draining, put the drain plug back on. Be sure not to overtighten the drain plug.

    4

Loosen the oil pan bolts and take off the oil pan. Clean off the old gasket, making sure all traces have been removed. Wipe out the oil pan with a clean rag and clean the mating surface with solvent.

    5

Apply a bead of liquid gasket to the mating surface and replace the oil pan while the liquid gasket is still wet. Torque the bolts according to specifications in the manual.

    6

Reattach the engine mounting through nut and bolt, oil cooler guides and dipstick. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the manifold, replace the flywheel cover and reconnect the battery cables.

    7

Refill the engine with about 5 qt. of motor oil. Start the engine and then recheck the oil with a dipstick, adding enough oil to bring it to the full level. 2000 Jeep Cherokees require between 5 and 7 qt. of oil, depending on the size of the motor.
