The 1995 through 1998 Chrysler Sebring offers style and value, but if you experience an oil leak as a result of a worn out valve cover gasket the end result could be damaged engine cylinders. This can be costly in the end so it is important that you replace the valve cover gasket.

Instructions

    1

Visit your local automotive parts supply store and purchase the supplies and tools that are needed to complete the necessary maintenance.

    2

Select a location that permits this type of maintenance to be performed. Allow the car to sit idle for several hours. This will allow the engine to cool. Lift the hood and disconnect the battery cable.

    3

Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line from the bracket. Disconnect the rear alternator brace and the serpentine belt. Disconnect the alternator brace stud lines.

    4

Disconnect the alternator and the loosen the alternator bracket. Locate and disconnect the bracket at the rear of the plenum. Lift the bracket, all hoses and wires aside. Disconnect the PCV valve. Gently twist and pull the spark plug wires, removing them from the spark plugs.

    5

Using the torque wrench, remove the valve cover bolts. Lift the valve cover up and off. Remove the old gasket. This may require that a flathead screwdriver is used to gently nudge the gasket out of the gasket seating area. Once the gasket has been removed clean the gasket seating area, taking care to remove any remnants or particles that were left in the gasket seating area are removed. This can be accomplished by using automotive engine cleaner, a scrub brush and a clean cloth rag.

    6

Insert the new gasket into place. Apply gasket sealer in the notch and place the valve cover back into place. Tighten the bolts in sequence. Reverse the steps putting the parts back together.

    7

Add oil to the car and start the engine. Allow the engine to run idle for 10 minutes.
