The Geo Metro has up to three belts. Changing the air conditioner belt, if applicable, is slightly different than the process for the power steering and alternator belts. The manufacturer recommends checking all belts for wear every 7,500 miles or 6 months. This guide refers to Geo Metro model years from 1985 to 2001. Check your owner's documentation for specific tools, methods and systems on your model year.

Instructions

Air Conditioning Belts

    1

Find the idler pulley bolt. This bolt moves the pulley and changes tension on the belt. On earlier models, this bolt is usually beside the pulley on the component. In later models, it's often in the center of the idler pulley.

    2

Move the idler pulley bolt with your wrench to release tension on the belt.

    3

Note belt routing for replacement. If you can't find a belt routing diagram under the hood, make your own sketch.

    4

Slip the old belt off of all pulleys and replace it with the new one, making sure the belt is seated on all pulleys.

    5

Tighten the idler pulley bolt (in reverse direction) to replace tension on the belt.

Other belts

    6

Find the lock bolt on the component. The lock bolt is on the side of the long adjustment bolt and holds that bolt in place.

    7

Use your wrench to loosen the lock bolt.

    8

Turn the adjustment bolt so that it moves the component closer to the engine, loosening tension on the belt.

    9

Slip the old belt off and use a belt routing diagram as mentioned above to install the new belt.

    10

Re-tighten the belt with the adjustment bolt and tighten the lock bolt.
