If you have mechanical experience, installing a new fuel tank in your Chevy Impala isn't a difficult job, but the key is to be aware of safety at all times. Here's how to install a new tank in a vintage 1977 to 1985 model Chevy Impala.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank and use a hand pump to drain the fuel from the neck opening and into a safe container. It may be necessary to remove the filter neck to gain access to the opening. Once the fuel has finished draining, replace the hose and cap.

    2

Raise the Chevy Impala with a jack and support it securely on a jack stand. Disconnect the fuel gauge connector from the wiring harness, and if necessary, remove the plastic retaining clamp on the lead.

    3

Unhook the fuel lines and the neck hose, and support the tank on a floor jack. Disconnect the retaining straps, and remove the tank from the vehicle. Raise the new fuel tank into position, and reattach the support straps.

    4

Remove the floor jack and reconnect the fuel filler line and neck hose. Reconnect the wiring harness and any other connections that are necessary.Remove the vehicle carefully from the jack stand.

    5

Fill the fuel tank and check for any leaks before reconnecting the negative battery cable.
