The emergency brakes on your vehicle were originally used to stop your vehicle when the regular brakes failed. However, the brakes on a Chevy Camaro now rarely fail and the emergency brakes are more often used to keep the vehicle from moving while parked. The most common source of failure occurs when the brakes aren't used for a period of time, causing the brake cable to rust and seize.

Instructions

    1

Determine which type of emergency brakes your Chevy Camaro will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for the Chevy Camaro use the rear wheels, which first had disc brakes in 1969.

    2

Ensure both parking brake levers are fully released. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel with a socket wrench. Remove the rear brake caliper and bracket as an assembly with a socket wrench.

    3

Remove the rear brake rotor and loosen the parking brake actuator adjuster nut with a socket wrench until you have completely relieved the tension on the parking brake shoe.

    4

Disconnect the parking brake shoe and the parking brake shoe retaining clip from the backing plate with a socket wrench. Remove the parking brake actuator retainer from the actuator.

    5

Install the parking brake actuator retainer to the park brake actuator with a socket wrench. Ensure the parking brake shoe engages the actuator and the park brake shoe retaining clip.

    6

Connect the new parking brake shoe to the park brake support plate. Adjust the parking brake clearance with tool J21177-A and complete the installation by reversing the remaining removal steps.
