The 1998 Pontiac Grand Am's headlamps are semi-sealed with user-replaceable bulbs, making it unnecessary to replace the entire headlamp unit when the need arises to install new headlights. The headlamp lens may degrade over time, or the lens and lamps could become damaged in a collision, thus creating the need to change the 1998 Grand Am's headlamp.

Instructions

    1

Shut off the engine and open the Grand Am's hood. Locate the butterfly fastener on the black panel on top of the driver's side headlamp. Turn the fastener by hand to remove it, and then lift off the black panel to access the top of the headlamp. This is not necessary on the passenger's side.

    2

Remove the two bolts on the support strap behind the headlamp using a ratchet or a wrench. There are two bolts per headlamp that keep the headlamps mounted in place.

    3

Pull the headlamp forward in order to access the back of the unit. Turn both of the bulb sockets counterclockwise to remove them. The wiring is connected to the sockets, so this also unhooks the wiring from the headlamp and separates it from the Grand Am.

    4

Insert the bulb sockets of the replacement headlamp into the appropriate slots. Turn them clockwise and push the headlamp forward into its mount.

    5

Insert and tighten the two bolts. If replacing the driver's side headlamp, put the cover back in its place and insert and tighten the butterfly fastener by hand.
