Nissan Pathfinder SUVs with a 3.3L or 4.0L engine utilize a distributorless ignition system (DIS), while other engine types use a distributor ignition system (DI). To replace the ignition coil, which is an integral part of the distributor in a DI, you need to replace the entire distributor.

Instructions

    1

Detach the ground cable, which attaches to the negative side of the battery terminal, from the terminal. You may want to isolate it to prevent injuries, like electrocution or accidents, like engine fires.

    2

Access the engine components. To do this, you may need to remove the engine cover, if your Pathfinder is equipped with one.

    3

Expose the ignition coil. You need to remove the throttle wires and the air duct with the air cleaner assembly.

    4

Remove the harness connectors and the bracket that holds it in place. The bracket encloses the sides of the Pathfinder ignition coil.

    5

Determine if you need to remove the number 4 spark plug. If you do, you need to remove the throttle body.

    6

Use a wrench or a socket set to remove the mounting fasteners. Then pull the old ignition coil away from the intake manifold connector.

    7

Install the new Pathfinder ignition coil and replace the components you removed.
