The tail-light assemblies on a 1997 Chevy Astro van contain multiple bulbs for the rear turn signals and back-up lights. You need to replace any bulb that burns out. If the lens breaks or cracks, you need to replace it and possibly all the bulbs as well. You need to get the correct replacement for whichever bulb you are changing. Avoid touching the bulbs bare-handed, as your natural oils can cause cause the bulb to overheat when lit.

Instructions

    1

Open the rear doors on the van. This provides access to the inner door frame where the tail-light assemblies are mounted.

    2

Unscrew the tail-light lens assembly from the rear door frame using a screwdriver. Rotate the assembly out of its tabs in the frame to remove it.

    3

Rotate the bulb holder for the bulb that needs changing counterclockwise to remove it from the lens assembly. Remove all the bulb holders if you need to replace the lens itself.

    4

Push down on the bulb and turn it counterclockwise to detach it from the holder. Pull the bulb out.

    5

Put on gloves. Insert the replacement bulb into the holder and turn it clockwise.

    6

Install the bulb holder into either the original lens assembly or the replacement. Turn each holder clockwise to secure it.

    7

Slide and rotate the lens assembly into its tabs on the door frame. Screw the lens assembly into place.
