How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Subaru Outback

The 2.0L, 2.5L Turbo and 3.0L engines in the Subaru Outback rely on a distributorless ignition system (DIS). In this type of system, the Outback ignition coil mounts directly to the cylinder head of the spark plugs, which is why the system is also known as a direct ignition.

Disable the battery's ability to charge to prevent accidents. To do this, remove the negative cable from the battery terminal.

Gain access to the ignition coil. Depending on the type of engine you have in your Subaru Outback, you may need to remove the air intake assembly and the windshield washer tank. If you do remove the windshield washer tank, don't remove the washer tank hoses--this allows fluid to gush out.

Remove the mounting screws for the ignition coil with a screwdriver, and pull out the old or damaged one. You may need to disconnect the spark plug wires or the electrical connectors, if any attach directly to the Outback ignition coil.

Position the new ignition coil and create a tight seal. Failure to do so may create ignition problems.

Check any components you removed for damage, wear or tear. If you can see any, replace the component before you reassemble.

Replace the parts and reconnect the battery.
