The symptoms of a bad fuel filter include a loss in horse power, very sluggish acceleration and, in some cases, difficulty starting. Replacing the fuel filter is always the best policy because you can't reliably unclog a filter. In the Cadillac Escalade, 2002-2006, they replace easily. The 5.3L engine filter replaces in a different way. Manufacturers suggest replacement of fuel filter every 60,000 miles.

Instructions

    1

Locate the fuel filter. Normally this is on the passenger side wheel well or just inside the engine compartment. In the Cadillac Escalade, it mounts on the fuel tank and is integral with the fuel pump assembly. Before removal of the filter, disconnect the negative battery cable and relieve the pressure in the fuel system.

    2

Lift the vehicle to gain access to the fuel pump assembly. Remove the threaded fittings from the filter and cap the fuel pipes to prevent contamination. Inspect the o-rings on the fuel pipes and replace if deteriorated.

    3

Change the filter and reattach the fittings immediately. Tighten the fittings to 18 foot pounds. Remount to the clip and lower the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the ignition. To fill the filter and get gas to the ignition system, turn the ignition on for two seconds and then off for ten seconds. The vehicle should start after this.

    4

Replace the fuel filter at the first opportunity. Filters are not serviceable items, they are disposable. Never rely on a clogged fuel filter for any length of time.
