Deposits form on the back or inside of intake valves because fuel is sprayed onto the hot valves. The build-up can cause emissions to increase and engine performance to decrease. With high gas prices, the last thing you need is poor gas mileage. If you notice your car is running rough or having trouble starting cold, take action to clean the intake valve.

Instructions

    1

Switch to a higher grade fuel with cleaning additives that control deposits. Techron is one such additive developed by Chevron. Chevron offers three grades of fuel with Techron. Texaco Power Premium also contains Techron.

    2

Use Techron Concentrate Plus as an additive to lower grade gasoline. It is a complete fuel system cleaner.

    3

Pour a bottle of additive, such as Valvoline Fuel Injector Plus Intake Valve Cleaner, into your gas tank before you fill it up every 3,000 miles or as directed on the label. Additives contain detergents that remove deposits from intake valves.

    4

Add one bottle of complete fuel system cleaner prior to fill up every 6,000 miles or as directed by the manufacturer. These products contain a high level of detergents that rapidly dissolve deposits.

    5

Take your car to an auto maintenance provider, such as Pep Boys, that provides intake value cleaning service. Quick oil change shops, such as Jiffy Lube, also offer this service.
