Emergency driving situations usually lead to someone slamming on their brakes to stop abruptly. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) helps to prevent wheel lockage in such situations so that your 1999 to 2005 Chrysler Sebring doesn't skid. In order for the ABS to function properly, the wheel speed sensors, which send signals regarding the speed of each wheel to the ABS, must be operating.
Instructions
Remove the Malfunctioning Speed Sensor
- 1
Park your Chrysler Sebring on a level surface, activate the emergency brake and place blocks behind the back tires for safety. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a terminal puller.
2Raise the vehicle on the side of the wheel speed sensor's location. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
3Remove the speed sensor cable routing bracket from the steering knuckle.
4Locate the inner fender and remove the wiring harness sealing grommet retainer, speed sensor routing bracket and speed sensor sealing grommet.
5Detach the speed sensor cable from the vehicle's wiring harness. As you do so, pay close attention to how the sensor cable loops toward the shock absorber and between routing brackets. You will need this information to install the new sensor cable properly.
6Unscrew the retaining bolt and remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle, which you should be able to remove by hand.
7Alter the sensor removal process a bit in the event that the sensor head locating pin rusts to the knuckle. First, remove the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle and the brake rotor from the hub/bearing assembly. Then, insert a pin punch into the hole in the front steering knuckle and tap the sensor head locating pin loose.
Install the New Speed Sensor
- 8
Connect the wheel speed sensor cable connector to the Sebring's wiring harness.
9Install the speed sensor cable assembly grommet into the front inner fender, followed by the cable grommet retainer and routing bracket. Be sure to securely tighten the bolt.
10Route the speed sensor cable between routing brackets appropriately, as you observed during removal. Failure to do so will cause the cable to rub against the tire, resulting in damage to the sensor.
11Attach the speed sensor cable routing bracket to the steering knuckle. Torque the mounting bolts to 105 inch pounds (12 Nm).
12Position the wheel speed sensor on the steering knuckle and secure with the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 55 inch pounds (six Nm).
13Replace the tire and wheel assembly as appropriate. Refer to your owner's manual to perform an ABS system check to confirm that you installed the sensor properly.
