When your turning blinker just stops working for no reason, either your switch connections are dirty or the flasher and relay has gone bad. To eliminate the possibility of dirty contacts on the relay, take a bottle of contact cleaner and liberally spray the contacts. The VW Jetta is one vehicle that tends to suffer from this problem. If this doesn't fix the problem, find and replace the turn signal relay.

Instructions

    1

Spray a small amount of lubricating oil onto the switch for the turn signal. This is located on the steering column. When the switch contacts become corroded or dirty, a good connection is not achieved and so the performance becomes sporadic or just doesn't work at all.

    2

Look on the dash for the hazard switch. On the Jetta, the turn signal and hazard flasher relay is part of the hazard switch. You must replace the whole unit if part of it fails. Obtain this flasher and relay from your local VW dealer or most auto parts stores.

    3

Remove the hazard flasher switch from the dashboard by pulling it straight out and removing it. Obtain a replacement switch for your exact year and model from a parts dealer or service center. Reinsert the new switch into the dash and press down to seat the switch. Start the Jetta and test to make sure both turn signals work and that the hazard lights work correctly.
