Knowing how to complete basic auto repair on your truck can save you time and money, plus extend the life of your truck. One of these applications should be how to replace the ball joints, which includes the installation of a new snap ring.

Instructions

    1

Secure the truck on a set of jack stands, remove the wheel and complete the replacement portion of the upper and lower ball joints of your truck. Once this is complete you can start the other maintenance involved in this process, including the installation of new snap rings.

    2

Look in the hardware kit you received with the new ball joints to find the new snap ring and grease fitting. Start with the grease fitting and screw it into place. Screw it down by hand first, then use a small pair of pliers to tighten it. Make sure to face the grease cert in an area where you can access it without having to remove the tire. If it is faced back, it can be accessed during oil changes.

    3

Install the snap ring by slipping the tips of a pair of needle-nose pliers into one of the inserts. This enables you to get the snap ring tightly into place. Put on a pair of safety glasses before installing the snap ring to avoid injury in the event of the snap ring coming off during installation, snapping loose like a rubber band.

    4

Place the snap ring over the top of the area where you installed your grease fitting and expand it, allowing it to slip snugly over the bottom of the area. Then close the needle-nose pliers allowing it to snap into place and tighten. Use the end of a screwdriver and hammer to tap the snap ring to make sure it's fitted properly. Slip the grease boot on to the bottom of the ball joint.
