How to Replace a Horn in a VW Jetta

The VW Jetta has been in production since 1979. It is essentially the sedan version of the VW Golf and also may be known by other names such as the Atlantic, Bora, Fox, Vento and Sagitar. The original equipment manufacturer's horn is an item that enthusiasts frequently replace with a much louder aftermarket horn. This procedure is fairly simple and you'll need only a few tools.

Buy a horn kit. A late model VW Jetta has one low tone and one high tone horn so a direct factory replacement kit should come with two horns. Ensure the new horn has the correct tone if you are replacing only one horn.

Locate the original equipment manufacturer's horns. The horns are just behind the fog lights. The high tone horn is on the driver's side and the low tone horn is on the passenger side.

Unplug the power connector from both horns and remove the single mounting bolt from each bracket with a socket wrench or short Phillips screwdriver. Remove the original horns.

Plug the original power connectors into the new horns if possible. If they are not compatible with the new horns, you will need to use the wire crimper/stripper to attach the original wiring to the new harnesses.

Mount the new horns using the nuts and washers that came in the kit. Bolt the horns to the original holes, if possible, with a Phillips screwdriver or socket wrench.

Test the new horns to ensure they work. Connect one horn at a time if you are unsure both are working.
