How to Replace a Horn in a Saturn Ion

The Saturn Ion was a compact car made from 2003 to 2007. It was based on the GM Delta platform and available in a 4-door sedan and 4-door coupe. Many Saturn Ion enthusiasts are dissatisfied with the sound of the original equipment manufacturer's horn and choose to replace it. Replacing a horn on an Ion is a relatively straightforward job requiring only a few tools.

Buy a horn kit. Direct replacement kits for the Saturn Ion will have only one horn but many aftermarket kits consist of two horns.

Remove the driver's side headlight. Use a 10mm socket wrench to unscrew two bolts above the headlamps and two above the center grill. The horn for the Saturn Ion is behind the driver's side headlight assembly.

Unplug the power connector and remove the single mounting bolt on the horn with the socket wrench. Take out the original horns.

Mount the new horns using the fasteners in the kit and some oversized washers. This will allow you to mount a pair of horns to the existing holes on the vertical support frame between the engine bay and light housing area. You can also mount a compressor in this location.

Splice the original pair of wires to the two horns according to the instructions for the new horns. The kit should include the connectors that you will need. Generally, you will use a wire crimper/stripper and 16-gauge wire to splice a Y connection from each original wire to produce two sets of wires that you will connect to two new wiring harnesses. You will then connect each harness to one of the new horns.

Test the new horn to ensure it works. Be aware that horns that use a compressor will be extremely loud.

Re-install the driver's side headlight by reversing Step 2.
