The Dodge Intrepid was one of the more technologically advanced car models created by Dodge. Production of the Intrepid was discontinued in 2004 after a little more than 10 years. The Intrepid's innovative cab forward design was supported by a suspension featuring spring links in the rear and coil springs in a MacPherson strut in the front. Replacing the springs in the Dodge Intrepid requires a few extra tools.
Instructions
Replacing Rear Springs
- 1
Raise the Intrepid and use jack stands to secure the wheels before accessing the rear spring.
2Remove the nuts and bolts holding the spring link using the special tool 9361 and guide 9361-2 starting with the spring link-to-knuckle nut and bolt. Follow directions with the tool 9361 and the guide.
3Remove the bolt and nut fastening spring link to crossmember before taking the spring link off the Intrepid.
4Replace the spring link and knuckle sleeve and reinstall all bolts and nuts. The special tools are used again at this time to install the new sleeve and attach the new spring link.
5Tighten the bolts and nuts to factory specifications. Do not over-torque the nut holding the link-to-knuckle bolt.
6Lower the Intrepid and tighten the spring link bolt to factory specifications.
7Align the wheels if necessary.
Replacing Front Springs
- 8
Disconnect or remove the attaching link to the stabilizer bar, negative cable to the battery and the front wheels.
9Use puller MB-990635/C-3894A to remove the outer tie rod end from the steering arm.
10Remove the speed sensor wiring harness mounting bracket from the strut, front brake rotors, the brake caliper sensor and tie off and support the caliper assembly.
11Remove the three or four strut assembly mounting nuts and washers and take the strut assembly off the Intrepid.
12Disassemble the strut assembly and remove the worn spring. Check the other parts for wear at this time. Use a factory replacement spring.
13Reattach the strut assembly according to specifications. The springs are between the upper mount of the strut assembly and lower spring seat. The elements of the MacPherson strut must be reassembled and attached to the Intrepid.
14Lower the Intrepid and tighten all nuts and bolts according to their exact specifications.
