How to Replace the Emergency Brakes in an Acura Integra

The original purpose of emergency brakes was to stop your vehicle in an emergency. Fortunately, the brakes on an Acura Integra rarely fail, and the emergency brakes are most commonly used to keep the vehicle from moving while parked. The most likely type of failure for emergency brakes is when the brake cable rusts and seizes after being unused for a long period of time.

Determine which type of emergency brakes your Acura Integra will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for all versions of the Acura Integra use the disc brakes on the rear wheels.

Release the parking brake and raise the vehicle. Remove the rear tires and use a socket wrench to unscrew the 6 mm bolt and 26 mm rear hub nut on each wheel so you can remove the rear brake disc rotor. Push and turn the retainer springs so you can remove the tension pins. Remove the return springs and hub.

Lower the parking brake assembly from the backing plate and separate the parking brake cable and lever. Remove the adjuster and springs. This will allow you to disconnect the wave washer, pivot pin and U-clip.

Install the new emergency brakes by reversing the removal procedure. Apply brake cylinder grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin before inserting it into the brake shoe. Squeeze the U-clip tightly to ensure it secures the brake lever and wave washer securely on the pivot pin. Apply anti-seize lubricant to the sliding surface of the shoe on the backing plate.

Use a torque wrench to tighten the 26 mm rear hub nuts to 206 foot-lb. and the 6 mm bolts to 7 foot-lb.
