If you notice a puddle of oil forming under the engine of your VW Passat, it may be a sign that the oil pan gasket has worn out. Changing the oil in newer Passat models is a very involved job for an experienced mechanic, but if you have a vintage Passat model year 1996 or older, the job is much simpler.

Instructions

    1

Use jacks to raise the front of the VW Passat up on jackstands and block the rear wheels to keep them stable.

    2

Climb under the car and slide a drain pan under the oil pan. Loosen the oil pan plug with a socket wrench and drain the oil into the drain pan. Allow enough time for the oil to drain completely.

    3

Loosen the bolts on the oil pan and carefully remove the oil pan from the engine.

    4

Scrape the old gasket from the oil pan with a thin putty knife, working slowly so you don't scratch the surface. Wipe the surface with solvent and a clean rag to remove any trace of residue.

    5

Wipe a thin coating of oil on the surface to promote adhesion and apply a replacement gasket.

    6

Attach a new oil pan gasket and attach the bolts in a crisscross pattern with a torque wrench. Tighten 1996 2.0L engines at 15 ft. lb., 1996 1.8L and 2.8L engines at 11 ft. lb.

    7

Jack up the car enough to slide out the jackstands and carefully lower the car and remove the jacks. Fill the engine with fresh oil. 1996 Passat models will run best if you use 5W-30 or 5W-40 motor oil. Check the level with a dipstick. Put the old oil in an empty milk carton and take it to a garage or a hazardous waste disposal facility.
