Spray Gun Fluid Tip Recommendations

To produce a professional quality paint job, spray guns must be fitted with the correct fluid tips and needles. Different vehicles require different paint types; these materials can differ greatly in terms of viscosity. When a paint material is activated and reduced, an optimal level of flow from the spray gun is required to promote the correct levels of atomization. Fluid tips and needles are essential parts of a spray gun that assist in this process.

Fluid Tips -- 0.034 to 0.044 inch

Smaller fluid tips are used in conjunction with a compatible needle to promote the smooth flow of paint materials with a low viscosity. The thinner the material, the more the spray gun needs to restrict the release of paint. Fluid tips in the size range of 0.034inch to 0.044inch are ideal for the thinnest products on the market, and are best suited for the application of plastic primers, transparent sealers and blending agents. The best needle for these fluid tips is the GTI-413, although a compatible part can suffice.

Fluid Tips -- 0.047 to 0.055 inch

As paint viscosities increase, the size of the fluid tips must increase as well. Fluid tip sizes are determined by the exit point that fits into the spray gun air cap; the correct diameter must always be used. Fluid tips with diameters of 0.047inch to 0.055inch are largely used for the application of modern water-based paint materials that must be sufficiently thinned to provide a flat-painted surface. Correct atomization also stops paint cobwebbing or landing on the panel in a dust-like coating. A GTI-413 needle suffices on this fluid tip range.

Fluid Tips -- 0.059 to 0.063 inch

Clear coats are much thicker in viscosity than the colors they protect, and are designed to flow slightly after application so that a flat and resilient finished surface is achieved. Fluid tips between 0.059inch to 0.063inch in diameter are perfect for atomizing the denser qualities of clear coats, and can be used with a GTI-413 or GTI-420 needle. The choice of fluid tip with clear coat largely depends on the individual application style of the painter.

Fluid Tips -- 0.071 to 0.087 inch

The 0.071inch to 0.087inch fluid tip size range is the largest of all, and are only to be used for the most viscous materials. When used in conjunction with a GTI-420 needle, these fluid tips are ideal for the application of high-build primers, synthetic paint materials and polymer paint sealers. When large fluid tips are being used, it is always advisable to have the fluid needle control valve of the spray gun wound out to its maximum level.
