The taillight lens on your 2005 Dodge Dakota shouldn't have to be replaced unless it is damaged or it has been compromised and degraded due to the elements. The lens itself is nothing more than a plastic cover. It's not a mechanical part that wears out over time, although you may find yourself replacing the bulbs inside the lens quite often. Replacing the taillight lens is a simple, straightforward task that will only take a few minutes.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a replacement taillight lens for your 2005 Dodge Dakota. Use a certified lens from your Dodge dealer for optimal fitting.

    2

Open the tailgate handle and lower the tailgate. This will reveal the inboard edge of each taillight lens, each of which is attached by two Phillips screws.

    3

Detach the screws from the lens with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the lens forward to remove it from the truck.

    4

Rotate both bulb sockets counterclockwise on the back of the lens. Pull the bulb sockets out to separate the lens from the body.

    5

Insert the bulb sockets into the holes on the back of the new taillight lens. Turn the bulbs clockwise to secure them.

    6

Push the new taillight lens into the truck's rear edge. Line up the holes on the inboard side with the screw holes on the edge of the truck. Insert and tighten the screws. Close the tailgate.
