Installing rear shock absorbers on a Toyota Sequoia means removing the old shocks first. The process is simpler than removing the front shocks and struts. You need to install a new set of shocks together, meaning you are installing them on both rear wheels. Work on one wheel assembly at a time so as not to confuse any parts. There are some parts from the old shocks that you may have to transfer to the new ones.

Instructions

    1

Block the Sequoia's front wheels with chocks. Raise the rear end with a jack and support it on jack stands, Remove both rear wheels.

    2

Raise the floor jack under the rear axle near the shock absorber to be replaced.

    3

Remove the lower mounting nut and bolt on the shock with a wrench. Remove the upper nut. Lift out the shock absorber.

    4

Remove the three retainers and two cushions from the top end of the old shock absorber and install them on the new shock. The retainers are separated from each other by a cushion. If needed, transfer the old shock's lower bushing.

    5

Install the shock absorber with its upper mounting nut, then the lower bolt and nut.

    6

Lower the floor jack and move it to the other rear shock absorber. Follow Steps 3 through 5 to replace the other shock.

    7

Lower the Sequoia off the jack stands after installing both shocks.
