How to Install a Ball Joint

For many vehicles, a ball joint connects the upper and lower axle arms to the steering gear. With time, these pieces may undergo wear and need to be replaced. The process of installing the ball joints on your vehicle can be a tedious one and may even require a specialty tool kit. However, knowing how to do the job yourself can save both time and money.

Instructions

    1

Rent or purchase a ball joint press kit. These kits are available at many auto parts stores for around $50 or for rent at some body shops. Buying the kit will ensure you will have it around whenever necessary. If you decide to rent, be sure to inspect the kit for damage before you leave the body shop so you won't get charged any additional fees.

    2

Loosen the lug nuts located on both front wheels slightly with a lug nut wrench. Make sure the wheels have not fallen off. Jack the car up from the front end of the vehicle onto a flat surface. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels. Also detach the caliper and caliper disc on one side of the vehicle so the ball joint can be accessed.

    3

Press down on the control arm with the press kit to remove the stud on the ball joint. If the stud does not come off, knock it repeatedly with a ball-peen hammer until it comes apart. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut with a pair of needle-nose pliers. The pin may need to be tapped with a hammer to be loosened.

    4

Unbolt the ball joints on both side and replace them with the new joints. You can use a vise to remove ball joints on older vehicles. The joints will be tightly positioned on the lower control arm. To drive out the ball joint, tighten down the vise. Replace the ball joint with a new one. The splines on the joint help keep it in place on the control arm.
