Even though all the engine types used in a Toyota Highlander rely on a distributorless ignition system (DIS), the process to replace a Highlander ignition coil varies between the models. Even with the variance, any do-it-yourself fan can make the replacement.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. To do this, remove the cable that connects to the negative terminal post. Also set your emergency brake.

    2

Expose the Highlander ignition coil. In a 2.4L engine, you need to take off the Number 1 engine cover. For models with a 3.3L engine, take off the V-bank cover and remove the intake air surge tank.

    3

Use a wrench or a small socket set to remove the connectors that hold the ignition coil to the cylinder head.

    4

Pull up on the Highlander ignition coil. If you have trouble freeing the ignition coil from the cylinder head, slightly twist the ignition coil as you pull.

    5

Position the new ignition coil in place. You may need to hold the boot and glide it over the cylinder head to ensure a tight fit.

    6

Reassemble the components that you removed. If you have a torque wrench, tighten the ignition coil retainers to 80 inch pounds (9 Nm) on the 2.4L engine or to 71 inch pounds (8 Nm) for the 3.3L engine. You can also tighten the connectors for the Number 1 engine cover to 80 inch pounds (9 Nm).
