When a thief tries to break into a vehicle, one method is to jam a flat-head screwdriver into the lock and turn it to open the door or trunk, destroying the lock in the process. Whether you're the victim of a thief or just have a broken trunk lock, replacing it isn't a huge deal, but it can be just a little confusing at first if you've never done it. This task should take about 30 minutes with the correct tools.

Instructions

    1

Open the trunk and look on the underside of the trunk lid to find the lock assembly. There is a metal linkage leading to the lock, held in place by a plastic clip. Pull off the clip and unhook the lock from the linkage.

    2

Place the flat-head screwdriver on the angled section of the wedge-shaped clip that holds the lock to the trunk. Hammer the flathead screwdriver to remove the lock from the trunk, and then take out the lock assembly.

    3

Place the replacement lock in place and push the clip onto it to wedge it in place, securing the lock against the trunk. Then connect the linkage to the new lock, using the plastic clip on the lock.

    4

Place your key in the lock and turn it. Make sure that it can operate properly and that it turns the linkage to the trunk latch correctly.
