Ford Motor Company introduced its iconic Ford Mustang in 1964 and it has since been the company's classic sports car. Mustang owners typically take pride in working on their cars themselves. Replacing the headlight bulb is one of the simplest repairs on a Ford Mustang. Please note these instructions apply to fourth generation models produced from 1994 to 2004.

Instructions

    1

Engage the parking brake of your Ford Mustang, remove the keys from the ignition and double-check to make sure you turned the headlight switch to the off position.

    2

Locate the interior hood release handle located under the instrument panel at the bottom left corner. Release the interior handle and walk around to the front of the car to release the secondary hood latch. This is located under the front center of the hood. Lift the hood and secure it with the prop rod, if equipped, but later models may use a hydraulic strut.

    3

Remove the two retainer pins located at the back of the headlight assembly by pulling them straight up and out. You may need to use a screwdriver or pliers to pry them up enough so you can grab and remove the pins using your hands.

    4

Pull the headlight assembly out and away from the front of the Ford Mustang. There are hidden retainers at the back of the assembly that the lamp will snap out of as you pull it out, exposing the back of the bulb.

    5

Unplug the electrical connector from the bulb by pulling it rearward. Remove the bulb retaining ring from the bulb base with a counterclockwise turn. Slide the ring off and put it in a safe place for use with the new bulb.

    6

Grasp the old bulb and pull it straight out of the assembly. Don't twist or turn the old bulb to remove it.

    7

Install the replacement bulb with the flat part of the plastic base facing up. Be sure to align the grooves in the plastic base with the tabs in the lamp assembly before pushing the new bulb in fully until the plastic base contacts the rear of the lamp assembly.

    8

Replace the bulb retaining ring, electrical connector and headlight assembly in reverse order of removal.

    9

Test your Ford Mustang's headlights after installation to ensure they work.
