How to Use Frame Machines

Frame machines allow mechanics to work safely on the underside of cars, repairing damage or carrying out essential maintenance. You can purchase frame machines in different shapes and sizes according to your needs. However, when buying a frame machine you will need to ensure you have enough room to house it. Not only will you need space for the frame machine itself, but you will need to make sure you can safely load and unload cars too.

Ensure the frame machine is in its lowest position. Check that the ramps are in place, and then slowly drive the car up the ramps onto the frame, making sure the tires are in line with the supports at the edge of the frame.

Put the handbrake on, and turn the car's engine off. Make sure the handbrake is on securely so the car won't roll off the frame. Exit the car, and step off the frame carefully.

Secure the car in position using the chains or blocks that come with the frame. If it has chains, you will need to wrap these around the car's wheels to prevent them from moving. You can use blocks to secure the wheels in place.

Refer to the frame machine's instruction manual for more detail on how to operate the machine. Modern frame machines work using a hydraulic system, which lifts the frame and the car slowly upward.

Stop the machine once the car has reached the desired height. Carry out any work you need to do on the car. When you have finished, refer to the manufacturer's handbook for information about how to lower the frame again.

Lower the frame. When it has returned to its lowest position, carefully remove any blocks or chains that were holding the car in place. Get into the vehicle, turn the engine on and slowly reverse the car down the ramps and back onto the ground.
