A fresh and shiny coat of paint is one way to give new life to your old car. Preparing the exterior of the vehicle before the new coat of paint is applied is an essential step. It is essential because it will ensure that the new coat of paint adheres smoothly and correctly. It will also help to make sure that no damage occurs to any of the unpainted components due to overspray during painting.
Instructions
- 1
Remove any detachable elements of your car that you do not want painted. Peel off any bumper stickers and remove the mirrors and antenna.
2Sand away any areas of rust or corrosion. Lightly rub with 400-grit sandpaper just until the rust is gone and the surface is smooth.
3Remove any sticky or grimy areas with a commercial linseed oil-based "goo" remover. Linseed oil-based substance removers will not damage the exterior of your car or leave a hard-to-remove residue.
4Wash your car thoroughly with a diluted mixture of automotive soap and water. Pay particular attention to any areas treated with "goo" remover. Allow the car to air dry thoroughly, at least 12 hours.
5Fill any cracks or dents with a commercial auto filler, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the filler to dry thoroughly.
6Sand the entire exterior of the car with a 320-grit sandpaper, until the surface goes from glossy to matte. Follow the 320-grit paper with a light sanding with 400-grit paper.
7Cover the tires, windshield and any other areas which should not be painted with painter's tape and pieces of drop-cloth.
