The ignition coil is a main part of the distributor ignition system on Dodge Durango SUVs with a 5.9L gasoline engine. This type of system uses the ignition coil to fire the spark plugs. Most do-it-yourself fans can replace the Durango ignition coil, when it becomes necessary.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Accidental contact can create a spark, which can start a fire. It can also shock or electrocute you.
2Locate the primary wires, or the spark plug wires, and disconnect them from the Dodge Durango ignition coil. You may need to release a lock by pressing on it.
3Release the high tension lead. The 5.9L engines have tension on the ignition coil bracket. You need to release the tension before you loosen the bracket.
4Use a socket set, small screwdriver or wrench to remove the fasteners that secure the ignition coil. Pull out the old ignition coil and replace it with a universal or a stock replacement ignition coil.
5Reverse the steps to reassemble the distributor assembly. Start the Dodge Durange to test that the repair worked.
