You may need to remove the tailgate from your Chevrolet Silverado to install a new one; you may also need additional bed space. Removing the tailgate is a simple procedure, as long as you have someone to help you--it is very heavy. Wear gloves to improve your grip. Be careful when lifting the tailgate from the truck bed; if you drop it, it could damage the tailgate. If it falls on you, it could cause serious injury. The same process applies to all Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra models.
Instructions
- 1
Open the tailgate to a 45-degree angle, allowing slack in the cable. Grasp the cable nut and move it to a horizontal position. Push the cable nut forward to disconnect it from the mount. Repeat the procedure for both tailgate cables.
2Pull the passenger's side of the tailgate hinge straight out (with the tailgate remaining open at a 45-degree angle), then pull the driver's side out.
3Hold the tailgate firmly on one side, and have your assistant do the same on the other side. Lift the tailgate up and away from the bed.
