The fuel filter in your Ford Mustang screens out dirt and rust particles from the fuel. Some mechanics recommend that you replace the fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to keep your Mustang in good running order. Follow the directions below to replace the fuel filter in a Ford Mustang that was made in 2005 or later.

Instructions

    1

Begin by removing the fuse from the fuel pump. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it quits. Crank the engine for about 5 seconds. This will release the pressure from the fuel injection supply manifold. Reinstall the fuse.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the fuel filter on your Mustang under the back end, between the gas tank and the rear end assembly. Remove the fuel bundle shield. Next, locate and disconnect the fuel line fittings. Remove the fuel filter bracket bolt, followed by the fuel filter.

    3

Place the new filter so that the direction arrow follows the flow of fuel through the system. Make sure the filter is secure in the bracket clamp and tighten the bolt to 44 inch-pounds.

    4

Replace the fuel line fittings. Then reinstall the fuel bundle shield. Tighten these retainers to 62 inch-pounds. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine on your Ford Mustang and check for leaks.
