The original purpose of emergency brakes was to stop your vehicle in an emergency. Fortunately, the brakes on a Honda CR-V rarely fail, and the emergency brakes are most commonly used to keep the vehicle from moving while parked. The most likely type of failure for emergency brakes is when the brake cable rusts and seizes when it's not used for a long time.
Instructions
- 1
Determine which type of emergency brakes your Honda CR-V will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for the Honda CR-V may use disc or drum brakes on the rear wheels.
2Raise the vehicle and remove the rear wheels with a socket wrench. Release the parking brake and remove the rear brake caliper. Detach the brake disc or drum with a socket wrench.
3Remove the upper and lower brake spring. Push the retainer springs and turn the tension pins to remove them. Move the forward brake shoe to remove the adjuster assembly. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever with a socket wrench to remove the rear brake shoe.
4Disconnect the rod spring and strut so you can remove the parking brake shoes. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, parking brake lever and pivot pin from the brake shoe.
5Apply Molykote 44 MA grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin, the opposite edges of the parking brake shoe and the pivot of the parking brake lever. Wipe off any excess and keep grease off the brake linings.
6Install the new brake shoes by reversing the removal procedure and adjust the parking brake.
