How to Choose the Oil and Fluids for a Mazda 6

Introduced in 2002, the Mazda 6, or Mazda Atenza as it is marketed in Japan, is a passenger sedan with a secret double life on the professional racing circuit. These steps apply to all model years of the Mazda 6 in typical use, but don't apply to racing or other specialty-use models.

Maintain your power steering fluid at designated levels with M-III or M-V automatic transmission fluids, or an equivalent such as DEXRON-III.

Drain and refill your automatic transmission at designated maintenance intervals, using M-V automatic transmission fluid in a 2.3 liter engine or T-IV automatic transmission fluid in a 3.0 liter engine. If you have other engine specifications, you should contact the nearest Mazda service department for more information.

Use GL-4 or GL-5 manual transmission oil, 75W-90 viscosity, in the manual transmission for all engine sizes.

Add ethylene-glycol based antifreeze coolant, in a 50-50 mix with distilled water, to maintain proper levels in your radiator and coolant overflow reservoir. If distilled water isn't available, you can use clean, drinkable water as long as it's soft or demineralized.

Change your engine oil regularly, using SAE 5W-20 viscosity. Make certain the quality designation SL or ILSAC is on the label.
