How to Replace a Radiator in a Nissan Sentra

It's essential to keep the radiator on your Nissan Sentra in good shape, as a worn radiator can cause leaks, and in turn, overheating and engine damage. However, radiators can be punctured accidentally or corrode over time. If you're mechanically inclined, you can save money by replacing the radiator yourself. Although the process is essentially the same for any year or model, here's how to replace the radiator in the popular 2001 Sentra.

Drain the coolant from the radiator into a resealable container.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the fresh air duct. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, and inspect them carefully. If they show signs of wear such as bulges or cracks, they should be replaced. If your Sentra is equipped with air conditioning, disconnect the cooler hoses and plug the ends to prevent fluid from leaking.

Remove the radiator fan and the radiator. Be careful not to damage the air conditioner condenser and radiator core.

Install the new radiator and the radiator fan.

Reconnect the air conditioner cooler hoses, if applicable. Attach the radiator upper and lower hoses and the fresh air duct, and connect the negative battery cable.

Fill the radiator with a mixture of half distilled water and half engine coolant.

Start the engine and let it run for a couple of minutes. Check the fluid level and add more water and coolant, if necessary.
