If your turn signal isn't working even after you installed new bulbs, you may have a problem with the turn signal relay in your Mercury Cougar. Replacing the turn signal relay may sound complicated, but it's something that most anyone can accomplish and it only takes a few minutes. In addition, it can save you the minimum hourly charge from a mechanic for something that's relatively simple.

Instructions

    1

Locate the relay panel on your Mercury Cougar. In the Cougar, it's usually on top of the steering column. You may need to remove the steering column cover in order to gain access to the panel.

    2

Remove the relay panel with a Phillips head screwdriver. On some models of the Mercury Cougar, you won't need the screwdriver as you can simply pull the relay panel off. In either situation, be careful not to use too much force as you can damage the panel.

    3

Look on the underside of the relay panel to make sure you know which relay to remove. There should be a diagram on the underside of the panel. If not, then you need to consult your owner's manual or use trial and error to figure out which relay controls the turn signal.

    4

Take out the potentially defective turn signal relay and replace it with a new one. Be careful when you replace the relay so as not to damage any of the surrounding relays.

    5

Switch on the Mercury Cougar and test to see if the turn signal works. If not, check to make sure you installed the relay securely. Should the problem persist, the culprit may not be the turn signal relay.

    6

Put the relay panel back into place and reinstall the steering column cover.
